
Moussa Kouyate, born in the Casamance region of Southern Senegal is a Master Kora Artist, hereditary player and instrument maker of pure descent, from 'griot' family Kouyate, fathers of West African music, advisors to kings and holders of the anthology of the music of the Mandinka people, since 1235.
Moussa lived and worked in Dakar for twenty years alongside many legendary West African musicians, including Soundoulou Cissokho 'Le Roi de la kora', with whom he enjoyed a particularly close relationship. Indeed it was he that prophesied that Moussa would inherit the title of 'King'. Main man in celebrated Senegalese band 'Alfahlake' for many years, composing and inspiring much of their work.
Moussa is now based in The Gambia where he is established as a musician, master teacher, instument maker, and as mentor to many Senegambian musicians.
He is further established as an International Artist having made his first visit to the U.K. Performance including WOMAD Edinburgh Fringe Festiva1s,
Considerab1e acclaim, This tour included performances at Bath International, Lemon Tree and Glastonbury Festivals and a wide range of other venues as a solo artist and in collaboration with Kevin. Brown, acclaimed UK blues guitarist. Moussa was also seen and heard on BBC Music Live and received extensive radio coverage including BBC Radio 3 show 'World Routes'
opened Baaba Maal's concert at The Royal FestivaI Hall, performed with Legendary Pee Wee Ellis and played The Spitz, London, Larmer Tree Festival and more with Kevin Brown. Most recently performed a series of concerts for 'Fundacio "La Caixa", Barcelona, as part of their International World Music festival.
