Adzido was founded in I 984 by George Dzikunu (Artistic Director) with a pioneering vision to produce work on a Large scale using the best possible facilities for production, designing and staging the work and collaborating with leading artists and companies. When Arts Council funding was attained in l 991, Adzido was able to retain a full performing company and has now established itself as the leading African dance company.
Mission Statement
Adzido Pan African Dance Ensemble exists to promote the appreciation, understanding and practice of African peoples dance, its music and its cultural heritage, in Britain and abroad. Adzido seeks to promote the richly diverse heritage of all cultural groups of black Africa by presenting dance, together with music, in forms which both respect and illuminate traditional values and have relevance in a contemporary, multi-cultural context.
Artistic Policy Through the provision of traditional African dance and drumming, Adzido aims to stimulate and enrich audiences world-wide. Adzida places traditional African dance and drumming in an innovative context, which, combined with contemporary theatrical design allows the arts of Africa to be presented with integrity and relevance.
Adzido's work plays a vital role within the general arts scene, increasing the awareness of the wealth, unity and diversity of African culture. It aims to develop the profile of African dance and drumming as an appropriate and integral part of the multi-cultural heritage of Britain and the African diaspora.
